When Blown-In Insulation Is the Better Buy

Blown-in insulation is loose cellulose or fiberglass installed with a hose and machine. Over an open attic floor it is often the most cost-effective way to reach R-38 or R-49, and it is the main option for insulating walls that are already closed. Many Arlington homes from the 1970s and 1980s still have their original loose fill, which settles over time and gets disturbed by storage, cable runs and HVAC service.

Cellulose or fiberglass

Cellulose is made mostly from recycled paper treated for fire resistance; it packs densely and resists air movement better than loose fiberglass. Fiberglass is lighter, does not absorb water as readily and is common in newer builds. Both work when installed to the right depth. Fixr lists cellulose at $1.75 to $3.80 per square foot and fiberglass at $1.65 to $2.60.

Seal first

Blown insulation does not stop air. Before we blow, we seal the attic floor at the top plates, lights, fans and chases with foam and sealant, put baffles at the soffits so the vents stay open, and insulate and weather-strip the hatch.

Closed walls

In finished walls we drill small holes, dense-pack cellulose into each bay and patch the holes, from inside or outside depending on the finish. It is a good fit for older homes with empty walls.

Blown-In Insulation Questions

How deep should blown-in insulation be?

For R-38 to R-49 it usually means somewhere around 10 to 16 inches or more, depending on the material. The quote states the depth and R-value.

Can you blow over my old insulation?

Usually, if it is dry and clean. Wet, moldy or rodent-soiled insulation should come out first.

Is blown-in enough without spray foam?

Often yes for an open attic floor, as long as the leaks are sealed first.

Does it make a mess inside?

Hoses run from the truck to the attic and the work area is covered. Dust stays mostly in the attic.
